DISABLE WINDOWS 10 UPDATE PERMANENTLY

As central as it is at the core of Windows 10, Windows Update is really just another Windows process, so it can be stopped with these simple steps:

Option 1: Stop The Windows Update Using Service

Open the Run command (Win + R), in the form type: services.msc and press enter or you can press (Win + S) button at a time, the search bar appears and you can type: service.msc or you can directly right-click on (This Pc) then select manage option a pop-up window appear, then click the service and application option.

From the list of services that appear to find and open the Windows Update service.

The first click on stop option then change it to 'Disabled' under the 'Startup Type' tab (General)

Restart

To resume Windows Update, simply repeat these four steps, but change the startup type to 'Update Automatic'

Option 2: Using Group Policy Editor

Group Policy Editor will notify you of new updates without automatically installing them (how the previous generation of Windows always works) - although again security updates will still be installed automatically.

Note: Windows 10 Home users have to sit it out, it is only for Windows 10 Education, Pro, and Enterprise Edition.

Open the Run command (Win + R), type in: gpedit.msc and press enter

Find: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update

Open it and change the configured automatic update setting to Not 2 - notify for download and notify for install '

Open the Settings app (Win + I) and navigate to -> Updates and Security -> Windows Update. Click 'Check for updates' applying the new configuration settings

Restart

To re-enable Windows Update, just repeat these steps (reverse process)

Option 3: Using Registry Editor

Open the run command (Win + R), type in: Regedit and press enter

Navigate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ WindowsUpdate \ AU

In it, create a value of -32-bit DWORD, called 'Au Options' and under Data Value Data' set a new key named as DWORD (32bit) value and the value from 0 to 1.

Restart
