If a hyped smartphone launch was not enough this week, we
saw today that Asus wraps up its next generation of gaming beast. The company
launched ROG Phone 3 including India at a virtual launch event. The ROG Phone 3
builds on the legacy of its popular and crazy value for money predecessor. It
is the first Snapdragon 865+ phone to launch in India, which includes a 144Hz
display, 64MP triple camera array as well as a large 6,000mAh battery.

ROG Phone 3: Specs and Features
The ROG Phone 3 carries the same design philosophy as its
predecessor. You still find small bezels on the front, top, and bottom, but are
considered essential for a complete gaming experience. Bezels help avoid
inadvertent touches, which is great, but the biggest advantage is that it has
space for dual front-firing speakers. This is one of my fav features.
The back-panel design is almost identical. Iridescent lines,
angular camera modules, and heat vent gaming help complete the phone look. It
sports a triple camera array, RGB-light ROG logo, and Gorilla Glass 3
protection on the rear. The fingerprint sensor sits under the display and to be
precise the phone still weighs a lot - 240 grams.
144 Hz display
On the front, the Asus ROG Phone 3 features a large
6.59-inch full-HD + AMOLED display with a 144Hz / 1ms refresh rate and a 270Hz
touch response rate. This is ROG Phone 2's step by 120Hz refresh rate / 240Hz
touch response rate. The panel has 19.5: 9 aspect ratio, 113% DCI-P3 wide color
gamut, Delta-E <1, 10-bit HDRX + certification., And up to 1000 nits of peak
brightness.
Snapdragon 865+
Under the hood, the Asus ROG Phone 3 is powered by a Snapdragon
865+ chipset that was recently announced by Qualcomm. It is one of the first
phones to be supported by this slightly overclocked flagship chipset. You will
also get 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage.
We cannot go without talking about the thermal of this
gaming phone. The ROG Phone comes with a 3G-gen Game Cool system. According to
the official press release, it performs 6x larger heat sinks, redesigned copper
3D vapor chambers, and larger graphite film. Asus says its thermal system will
help keep the temperature under control, providing a stable gaming experience.
Air trigger 3
Taiwanese giants make existing ultrasonic shoulder buttons
with new motion tracking gestures. The ROG Phone 2 added tap and slide gestures
in addition to the normal functionality of the air trigger. However, you can do
a lot with the ROG Phone 3 as it now also supports the "swiping" and
"dual partition" functions.
The swiping function, as the name suggests, lets you swipe
right or left on each air trigger to perform 2 additional actions. This means
that you now have five touch inputs via an air trigger. If you don't have a cup
of tea, you can split the length of the air trigger into two (approximately)
and get four buttons on top while playing in landscape mode. The former is
definitely going to come in handy for quickly popping a bandage or med kit in
the Battle of PUBG.
In addition, Asus continues to offer additional ports on the
edge of the ROG Phone 3. It includes a side-mounted USB Type-C port, as always,
to connect accessories and charging cables when you use the phone in landscape
mode.
64MP triple camera
The dual-camera setup already introduced in ROG Phone 2 gets
an upgrade over time. Now you have a triple camera array on the ROG Phone 3,
which is from the 64MP (f / 1.8) Sony IMX686 sensor. There is a 13MP (f / 2.5)
ultra-wide camera with 125-degree FOV and 5MP macro camera onboard. It supports
up to 8K video, 4K slow-mo video recording, and a Pro mode.
We expect the cameras on the ROG Phone 3 to be a lot more
decent, even if it is a more gaming-centric phone. Don't forget the top-notch
24MP selfie camera.
6,000mAh battery
Another highlight for the ROG Phone 3 is, well, a 6,000mAh
battery. It was the highlight for its predecessor and liked by users, thus, it
is here to stay. The phone also supports up to 30W of fast-charging, which Asus
can digest with 75 percent (about 4,510mAh) of battery in just 75 minutes.
This sounds great for hardcore gamers, who can plug in their
phones and charge something to continue the practice quickly. One thing the
game wants - a 3.5mm audio jack, however, is missing in action. Asus is
bundling the Aero active Cooler 3 with the ROG 3 to not only bring back the 3.5
mm jack but also reduce the temperature to 4 degrees Celsius.
Price and Availability
The ROG Phone 3 will be available in two configurations - 8
GB + 128 GB and 12 GB + 256 GB. Asus has started the price of ROG Phone 3 from
Rs. 49,999 (~ $ 670) for the base variant while the higher end 12GB + 256GB
variant costs you Rs. 57,999 (~ $ 777) in India.
This smartphone will be available for purchase in a single
black colour variant and will go on sale starting August 6, exclusively on
Flipkart.
