The Redmi Earbuds S is Xiaomi's most affordable True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones in India. These buds are feature-filled and aim to provide Tangle Free Wireless facility to young consumers at a nominal cost.
So, do these really make an excellent
deal, or are there hidden agreements to deal with? We will try and address all
such questions in our review of Redmi Earbuds S and by the time we work, you
will know whether these earphones are suited to your needs.
Design, Fit & Pair
Xiaomi placed great emphasis on the
fit of these buds, and we can swear by these claims. I'm very agile when it
comes to in-ear options, and the Redmi earbuds fit surprisingly well. These
buds are light (4.1 grams) and sit quietly and securely in my ears. They can
prevent ambient noise without posing any discomfort even after being worn for
hours at a stretch. If you're looking for a workout partner, you can be sure
that they haven't stopped yet - and they are IPX4 Splash and Sweat Resistant.
Redmi Buds look cheap or not and the compact charging case they come in is also
of very good quality.
However, all is not well.
Multifunction push-buttons on buds that require gestures and functions such as
music playback controls are not particularly useful. I know, touch gestures
will be very much expected in this price segment. But these buttons need to be
softened. Pressing the multifunction button often injures our ears and disturb
the position of the buds. As these additional functions contribute a major part
to the TWS attraction, it is a major urination point. Also, the charging port
is a regular micro USB. If your phone has a Type-C port, you will need to carry a
separate charging cable for the case. Pairing is quite comfortable. There is no
button on the case - just open it, take out the buds, and manually add the
Redmi earbuds S (Google fast pairing is not supported and a pairing card is not
pop-up). From next time, just have to open the case.
Sound Quality
I am very confused about this part.
On the one hand, the fact that the Redmi Earbuds S does not have a very good
sound. They just don't. Soundstage sounds narrow, and earbuds struggle with
separation in the instrument. Plus, bass, while Thulthula, is also muffled.
On the other hand, they cost ₹ 1,799,
and at that price, it also makes sense of sound quality. I mean, at this price
point your choices are incredibly limited. There is not much to compare these
earbuds.
This is why I am saying that the
sound here is not great. Don't expect them to compete with earbuds like Mi TrueWireless earbuds or Realme Buds Air. But this should be expected given the
price difference.
Is it impossible to enjoy music on
these earbuds? no, it's not. If anything it is a fairly decent experience. And,
under 2,000, you won't get too many TWS earbuds anyway. The Redmi earbuds S get
quite loud, and the sound is not bad which is very good.
If the sound quality is something you
can't compromise on at all, you'll either need to increase your budget, or
consider TWS, and instead of this same mobile bracket, OnePlus Bullets WirelessZ () 1,999).
Additional Work & Call Quality
Additional functions work reliably on
the Redmi Buds S but, as we talked above in the design section, pushbuttons make
them a bit inconvenient to execute. The good thing is that these gestures are
not accidentally triggered, which can be very annoying especially when you are
using TWS buds while lying in your bed.
Using the multifunctional button, you
can control music playback, manage incoming calls, and call a smart assistant
on your phone.
Here is the list of things that you can do:
1. Call or end call, answer the
second call - single press on the button.
2. Switch between calls – Press twice
during a call.
3. Reject Call - Press and hold.
4. Play / Pause Music - Single press
while listening to music.
5. Trigger Google Assistant (or any
other accessory) - Double press.
6. Switch between earbuds and phone
audio during a call - hold down the multi-function button.
7. Mute / Unmute during a call -
double press.
8. Enable / Disable Game Mode -
Triple press.
Call quality is above average
compared to other inexpensive TWS buds, but once again they are not expected to
outperform wired options. Unlike wired options, wireless buds do not have a
dedicated inline microphone and the mic input on these buds has to be
amplified, which makes it difficult to eliminate noise. The Redmi Earbuds S
still does a good job with noise cancellation during calls, but call quality
takes a hit in noisy environments.
Connectivity
Anyway, going forward, these earbuds
come with Bluetooth 5, which is really great considering their price. If you
wish, you can use them individually and they can be easily added. You can just
take the earphones out of the case, look in your phone's Bluetooth settings, and
tap on the mi Redmi Earbuds S 'to pair them with your phone.
Redmi Earbuds S only supports the SBC
codec. While this may sound like a major drawback, at 99 1,799 I don't know if
I can actually hold up against the company.
Battery
Battery
For these small earbuds, the Redmi Earbuds S has a surprisingly good battery life. Xiaomi claims to have 4%
listening time from earbuds at 80% volume on a single charge. From my test, this
claim is more than correct. After two hours of continuous listening at 80%
volume, the Redmi Earbuds S dropped to only 60% charge. So yes, they will
easily last 4 hours on one charge.
The case charges earbuds three times
to get 12 hours of total listening time, which is great. This is even more
impressive given the price. Honestly, I have no complaints about battery life.
The only complaint I have is that it is somewhat related to the battery, the
lack of a micro USB cable in the box.
Advantage and Disadvantage
Okay, to sum things up, let's take a quick look at what's good and what's bad about these earphones.
Pros:
Really well priced
Great design and construction
Fit and rest is on point
Cons:
Micro-USB cable is not included
Sound quality should have been better
Sbc codec only
Redmi Earbuds S: Should You Buy Them?
Redmi Earbuds S offers excellent
prices. Of course, some corners had to be cut to accommodate the budget price,
but Xiaomi seems to have made all the right choices. If you know what you are
doing, you will not be disappointed.
These buds provide excellent fit,
have good battery mileage, above-average audio quality, and reliable
connectivity. On the downside, pushbuttons are not very convenient.
If
you are restricted by a 2K budget and are looking for a TWS experience, we can
definitely suggest the Redmi Earbuds S as an option.
